Abstract
Since the 1940s metallic implant materials have been predominantly used for the manufacture of artificial hip joints. In the 1960s artificial acetabular sockets were also manufactured from polymers, and femoral components made from these materials were tested in the 1970s. Aluminium oxide ceramic, which was also introduced in 1970s, has since found acceptance as an implant material for the femoral and acetabular components of various total hip systems. In the last few years carbon has also been tested as a material for total hip prostheses (Willert — Semlitsch, 1981).
