Summary

Scheelite exploration carried out over the Italian Alps proved the widespread tungsten distribution within the “old” crystalline basements of the different geotectonic units. The discovery of several outcropping mineralizations resulted from a systematic alluvial prospecting, followed by intensive field exploration at night on selected zones. Although the distinctive features of the scheelite ores vary considerably in the single enclosing units (Austroalpine, Penninic, and Helvetic) depending on their different geological histories, the metal enrichment commonly belongs to lithostratigraphically well-defined horizons of the basement metamorphic sequences (referable to differentiated paleogeographical situations) with extensive mobilization phenomena mainly in the Penninic and Helvetic complexes.
