Investigations on the Gold Occurrences in the Kinyra and Thasos (City) Area on Thasos Island (Greece)

Summary

Investigations in the Northeastern and Eastern part of the island of Thasos yielded gold contents up to 35 ppm for ores from the gold mines mentioned already by Herodot. On the basis of up-to-date geological and mineralogical results four types of deposits can be recognized:

• 1. veins

• 2. karst fillings

• 3. lenticular ore bodies

• 4. sulfide layers.

According to archeological investigations the second type was most important for gold mining at the times of Herodot.

Zusammenfassung

Untersuchungen im nordöstlichen und östlichen Teil der Insel Thasos haben in den schon von Herodot erwähnten Goldbergwerken Goldgehalte bis zu 35 ppm und Silbergehalte bis zu 20 ppm ergeben. Aufgrund der bisherigen geologischen und mineralogischen Ergebnisse lassen sich vier Lagerstättentypen erkennen:

• 1. Gänge

• 2. Karstfüllungen

• 3. Linsenförmige Erzführungen

• 4. Sulfidlagen.

Nach archäologischen Untersuchungen ist der zweite Lagerstättentyp zu Herodots Zeiten wichtigster Goldabbau gewesen.
