Part of the book series: Special Publication No. 3 of the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits ((MINERAL DEPOS.,volume 3))

Summary

The Berchtesgaden salt deposit is part of the Eastern Alpine Salinar. Its contents belong mainly to Schauberger’s Hallstatt Salt facies of Permotriassic age. Minerals are halite, anhydrite, gypsum, and polyhalite in various forms of “Haselgebirge”, which contains only 50% NaC1 in average. The actual form, extension and thickness of the deposit, which has been mined since 1517, is not yet completely known. Practice of “wet-mining” has changed since 1975 from the “sinkwerk” method to the new method of combined drilling and rinsing, developed by Ambatiello (1980), which is exclusively applied in the 1st deep level. The new method is described in some detail. It reduced the expense for labour by 77% and gave an economizing for winning of brine of 72%.
