Part of the book series: Special Publication No. 3 of the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits ((MINERAL DEPOS.,volume 3))

Abstract

The first signs of civilisation at the Dürrnberg site can be traced back to the second millennium B.C. Systematic salt mining is estimated to have begun about 800 B.C. This means that the salt mines at Hallstatt and mount Dürrnberg were being exploited during the same period. It is estimated that in the first period the Dürrnberg mines were operated as a branch of the Hallstatt mines. But the mining technology at the Dürrnberg very soon developed to a high degree and became both technically and economically independent.
