Abstract
Propafenone hydrochloride, known commercially as Rytmonorm, is a synthetic antiarrhythmic drug produced by Helopharm, Federal Republic of Germany. Its chemical formula is 2′-(2-hydroxy-3-propylaminopropoxy)-3-phenylpropiophenone hydrochloride. It is available in the form of 150- and 300 mg oral tablets and as a parenteral preparation (70 mg per vial). The antiarrhythmic properties of this drug were reported by the Berlin Pharmaceutical Institute in 1979, after experiments with animals and human beings. It was demonstrated to be quite effective in the treatment of both ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias.
