Photomorphogenesis of Marine Macroalgae

  • Chapter
Photomorphogenesis

Part of the book series: Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology ((PLANT,volume 16))

Abstract

The photobiology of marine algae is of particular interest for three reasons: (1) The diversity of photosynthetic pigments indicates that a greater physiological variety is to be found among the photobiological responses of algae than among those of higher plants. (2) The natural light climate experienced by marine algae is far more varied, both in quality and quantity, than in terrestrial habitats, and this fact suggests that photobiological responses with different action spectra and different quantum requirements may have important consequences for plant growth and distribution in the underwater environment. (3) The early stages in the evolution of all plants occurred in the sea, and the different physiological mechanisms of today’s marine plants may represent evolutionary experiments, which could advance our understanding of the mechanisms operating in higher plants.
