Light Control of Seed Germination

  • Chapter
Photomorphogenesis

Part of the book series: Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology ((PLANT,volume 16))

Abstract

Seed germination in many plant species is influenced by light. Promotive effects of light were first documented in the second half of the 19th century, but later inhibitory effects were also described. Historical reviews are given by Barton and Crocker (1948) and by Evenari (1956,1965). There are also general reviews on light and seed germination by Black (1969), Rollin (1972), Toole (1973), Kendrick (1976) and Vidaver (1977).
