Abstract

This chapter deals with protocols used over a point-to-point physical communication channel. They provide a reliable data transmission service between the two stations connected via the channel, which is more or less unreliable. The different sections of this chapter deal with the transmission service provided by the physical channel and the different protocol sublayers into which a link protocol may be divided, as outlined in section 4.2.1. Similar considerations also apply to the lower protocol layers of local area networks with broadcast transmission1.
