As explained in section 4.2, higher-level function oriented protocols rely on an appropriate process-to-process message transport service, which is provided at the interface of the transport subsystem. Depending on the applications, different communication requirements are encountered. These requirements may be characterized (i) by the way in which a communication partner is identified and selected, and (ii) by the following points:
