Abstract

This chapter deals with the specification of distributed systems. Many of the concepts discussed here are included in a state machine model being developed by ISO and CCITT as a formal description technique for the specification of OSI communication services and protocols1. The concepts are illustrated by examples of service and protocol specifications for a simplified transport layer.
