Abstract

This paper tries to give an overview about developments and the status of upper layer standardisation projects. For file, job and terminal applications the work in the single projects is reviewed under the following aspects: how the work has progressed during the pasttime, what is the actual status, what are the main difficulties still to be resolved and when stable specifications can be expected. For the work on presentation layer specifications also a short summary is given.

By this paper it is intended to draw attention to the fact that the standardisation of OSI applications is really progressing so that stable specifications are to be expected within the next one or two years. Planning activities for open networks should therefore seriously take into account these developments.
