Abstract

The main objective of this contribution is to offer evidence of the need to revisit the field of the mechanical behavior of metals, taking advantage of basic physical concepts which have almost systematically been neglected in materials research.

The same paper has also been presented as an invited talk to the 2nd General Conference of the Condensed Matter Division of the EPS, 22–25 March 1982, Manchester, UK. It will appear also in the Proceedings of that Conference
