Abstract
Since it is likely that total annual rainfall and soil carbon content will have an influence on the total soil nitrogen in any given soil type and vegetation type, it is of interest to examine the position of the Burkea savanna at Nylsvley in relation to other South African savannas, with respect to these factors. Rainfall in South African savannas varies from less than 400 mm along the margins of the Kalahari, to more than 1000 mm in parts of Natal. Nylsvley receives approximately 630 mm rainfall annually (Coetzee et al 1977) and is therefore fairly centrally situated in this regard.
