Zusammenfassung
Als infektiöse Arthritis oder Gelenkinfektion wird das Eindringen von Bakterien, Viren und Pilzen- also lebenden Mikroorganismen- in ein Gelenk bezeichnet. Diese echten Gelenkinfektionen sind von para- und postinfektiösen Arthritiden symptomatischer oder infektions-allergischer Art unbedingt abzugrenzen, wie sie im Verlauf viraler oder bakterieller Allgemeininfektionen begleitend auftreten können. Ein Nachweis von Erregem im Gelenk oder seiner unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft ist in diesen Fällen nicht möglich. Die Definition einer infektiösen Arthritis setzt eine unmittelbare Invasion von Mikroorganismen in das Gelenk voraus. Im angelsächsischen Schrifttum ist oft keine genaue Abgrenzung zwischen infectious arthritis (=Arthritis im Zusammenhang mit Infektionskrankheiten) und septic arthritis (Gelenkinfektionen im eigentlichen Sinne) gegeben.
