The Role of the Gallbladder and the Sphincter of Oddi in the Regulation of Enterohepatic Bile Acid Circulation and Biliary Lipid Secretion

  • Chapter
Clinical Hepatology

Abstract

Apart from their role in the absorption of lipids and lipid-soluble vitamins, bile acids are the organism’s main means of eliminating cholesterol. They also exert an important cathartic function in the small intestine, ensuring the liquidness of its contents and making them accessible to absorption. In the colon, too, their laxative action is thought to be of physiological importance: the rare syndrome of congenital bile acid deficiency is accompanied by severe constipation. Effective enterohepatic recirculation is a most economical manner of conserving bile acids.
