Abstract
In the last few years there has been a transformation in the way in which renal failure is radiologically investigated. The prime goal remains the differentiation of hydronephrosis from a small or large kidney affected by a medical cause of renal failure. Obstructive causes of renal failure are treatable by either percutaneous or surgical drainage techniques and are associated with progressive destruction of glomeruli and nephrons if left untreated. Possible renal obstruction represents a radiological emergency. Sonography has proved to be reliable in the diagnosis of hydronephrosis [3, 6, 7, 11, 12], relegating the retrograde pyelogram to a limited role, i.e., showing the precise level of the obstruction and the nature of the obstructing lesion once the diagnosis of hydronephrosis has been established by other imaging modalities.
