Abstract

The historical development of the methods of communication between man and man in different societies is in many ways similar. Only the time scale between the different stages of development is known to vary. In a developing country such as Nigeria, the drum, popularly known as “tamtam”, was as late as in the fifties a useful means of communication. Even today, in some parts of the country, errands on foot, on horses, in canoes and in lorries carry messages of importance from one place to another. However, within a span of two decades the nation has become fami-liar with such complex telecommunication systems as telephony, telemetery, telecontrol, telex, radio broadcasting and television transmitting message signals on cable, microwave radio and satellite communications networks.
