Abstract
It is a great honour for the International Telecommunication Union and for me to be invited to chair the international session of your symposium with such prominent leaders as Eric Sumner of the Bell Laboratories, President of the world’s largest professional communications engineering society, and Seisuke Komatsuzaki from Japan. These two speakers represent the industrialized countries of the world. There is no secret that some 80 % of the 550 million telephones constituting the world network are installed in only 8 industrialized countries. However, I have pleasure in advising that the 108 developing countries of ITU’s 157 Member countries are also represented at this session through Professor Omotayo Seriki of the University of Lagos, Federal Republic of Nigeria.
