Abstract
Alfentanyl is a novel narcotic analgesic with a very short duration of effect. A volunteer receiving a clinically useful dose of 0.5 mg perceives an effect about 20 s after injection, the action is marked after 1 min, maximum from 2 to 4 min, and nearing completion 5 min after injection(1). It has a potency of approximately one third that of fentanyl, and the duration of effect is also approximately one third that of fentanyl; it is also less cumulative than fentanyl(2).
