Abstract
Flexible horny layers have evolved to allow complex muscle movements, increased sensation and intricate manipulations. Flexibility requires horny cells devoid or organelles, but toughened in their plasma membranes and keratinised to fulfil the protective function. Organelles are removed late in epidermal cell (keratinocyte) life at the granular layer stage of differentiation [2]. This process is termed orthokeratosis.
