Abstract
Since the late 1960s, a number of retrospective trials have reported an increased survival among patients with ischemic heart disease and hypertension treated with β-blockers [1–5]. However, these trials are all exposed to the drawbacks and dangers of retrospective observations. A number of prospective trials have been planned and carried out. The purpose of the present paper is to review the published findings. Special attention will be paid to the major points of criticism often raised in connection with the respective trials, in an effort to prepare a rationale for our clinical management of patients today.
