Abstract

Circadian variation of adrenocortical function has been well documented, both in man and in many animal species. The factors entraining the adrenocortical rhythm in the rat, both light and food, have been extensively studied. However, only a limited number or studies are available on the maternal influence in the development of this rhythm (Levin et al. 1976, Takahashi et al. 1979, Hiroshige and Honma 1979, Miyabo et al. 1980). Moreover, the influence of social cues has not been sufficiently studied in this animal, while its importance has been well established for man (Aschoff et al. 1975). The present study is mainly concerned with these two subjects; i.e. the maternal influence and the social influence on the corticosterone rhythm.
