Abstract

As already stated in Chapter 7, Dahlgren (1977) separated the Sympetalae into iridoid and non-iridoid blocks. The former comprises the Corniflorae-Loasiflorae-Gentianiflorae-Lamiiflorae and the latter the Araliiflorae-Asteriflorae-Solaniflorae superorders. It is beheved that these two blocks have become differentiated from each other at a relatively early evolutionary stage. Polyacetylenes and sesquiterpene lactones are mentioned as the relevant chemical characters of the Araliiflorae and the Asteriflorae. The following considers the evolution solely of the polyacetylenes.
