Abstract
Evolution in organisms is contingent on their ability to resist and even control external factors as the environment changes around them. In animals, adaptation to changing conditions involves evolution of form (linked to primary metabolism) and behaviour pattern. In plants, it is form (again linked to primary metabolism) and secondary metabolism which react (Swain 1974), and the crucial question concerns their interconnection.
