Abstract

Important progress has been made in our knowledge of the radiation response of squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal, with a substantial improvement in local control and preservation of anal function. The respective roles of radiotherapy and surgery are not the same as they were 10 years ago. With the exception of the rare anal cancer complicated by major sepsis, radical surgery is no longer the first approach to the management of anal canal squamous cell carcinoma.
