Abstract
Open-heart surgery is commonly followed by postoperative psychiatric complications. Most of the investigations so far made have been catamnestic studies which have not distinguished between the predisposing factors and the effects of the operation itself. If the patients are carefully examined prior to the operation and followed up post-operatively and during the rehabilitation period, it should be possible to keep apart the psychic predisposing factors and the organic factors associated with the operation. It is also possible to try to evaluate the predictive capacity of postoperative complications with psychiatric-psychological examination.
