Abstract

Myocarditis means simply inflammation of the myocardium, and this is the best complete definition. Infections can of course cause myocarditis, but so can a variety of noninfectious diseases. Every focus of degeneration in the myocardium, whatever its etiology, is associated with some degree of inflammation. Furthermore, every such focus is normally eventually replaced with scar, so that after focal degeneration one must expect focal fibrosis. These are two principles fundamental to a comprehensive understanding of myocarditis: that virtually every form of myocardial degeneration is associated with some inflammation, and that degeneration inevitably ends in some degree of fibrosis.
