Abstract

The striate area (Area 17, Brodmann) of the adult human brain (cortical material obtained by surgery) was investigated in Golgi and Nissl preparations and with the electron microscope. Since primary cortical areas receive a defmed main input, they are particularly appropriate for clarifying questions concerning intracortical connectivity. The stripe of Genrtari is visible to the naked eye. The boundaries of the area can therefore be unequivocally determined. In this study, the nomenclature of the laminae of the striate area proposed by H. Braak (1976) is adopted. Cortical neurons, except those of layer I, can generally be classified as either pyramidal cells or non pyramidal, Le., stellate cells.
