Fever and Its Role in Disease: Rationale for Antipyretics

  • Chapter
Pyretics and Antipyretics

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 60))

Abstract

Disease and infection are almost invariably accompanied by the symptom of fever. Indeed, fever may often be the diagnostic sign that such an infection is present and can be used in the diagnosis of specific diseases. In fact, from the detailed descriptions of fevers given by Hippocrates, it is even possible to identify specific ailments (Atkins and Bodel 1979).
