Prostaglandins in Fever and the Mode of Action of Antipyretic Drugs

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 60))

Abstract

It was in the year 1763 that the Reverend Edward Stone of Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire, England presented to the Royal Society in London the results of his observations on the use of the bark of the willow tree in the treatment of ague (Fig. 1). This is the first scientific account published on the use of an antipyretic drug. Just over 200 years later we are beginning to understand the mechanisms of action of antipyretic drugs.
