Abstract

Acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP) and necrotizing colitis (NC) may develop simultaneously, as it appears from some reports in recent years (1, 2, 3, 9, 26), but the real frequency of the association is difficult to assess. It is not evoked in general studies dealing with NC (19, 22, 28, 29, 36, 37, 43), but is dealt with now and then in the most recent papers on the surgical treatment of ANP (4, 14). In 1976 Leborgne et al. (26) reported only 11 such cases in a general survey of surgical literature, and in 1979 Abcarian et al. (1) reported two cases among ten instances of colonic complications of ANP. We have observed eight cases of NC in a series of 100 cases of ANP diagnosed either by surgery or postmortem examination (Table 1). That is why we suspect a common pathogenetic factor, which might be shock. These cases remind us of those in which cardiac infarction is associated with NC (5) or ANP (25, 41).
