Abstract
The differences in national requirements for testing the safety-in-use of certain chemicals such as pesticides, flavourings, plastics food packaging and cosmetic products and their ingredients, has prompted the Council of Europe, an international inter-governmental organisation, to approach these problems through the elaboration of general guidelines for toxicity testing and toxicological evaluation. These are intended as a model for national authorities and manufacturers on the information to be supplied and the procedure to be followed for the inclusion in positive lists of the substances in question and are open to revision or modification at any time.
