Abstract
The increase in the number of different registration schemes responsible for generating toxicological data and evaluating chemicals for risks to humans has produced two main approaches by government organisations. Arguments are presented in favour of a flexible, as distinct from the rigid approach, if the best use is to be made of skilled toxicologists and the best quality assessments correspondingly made.
