Abstract

The Dahlem Conference on Mineral Deposits and the Evolution of the Biosphere was born in 1978 at the Ram Hotel in Jerusalem. One of us (M.S.) had the good fortune to be breakfasting there with Dr. Silke Bernhard during the course of the 10th International Sedimentology Congress. The conversation turned to Project 157 of the International Geological Correlation Program, an interdisciplinary project which is investigating the relationships between early organic evolution, mineral deposits, and energy resources. An international conference for specialists in these areas appealed to both of us, and the 23rd Dahlem Conference grew out of our common interest. The topic of the conference gradually evolved into something that was both broader and more restrictive than the charter of the IGCP Project 157. It was broader, because it included not only the early phases but the entire time span of organic evolution; it was more restrictive, because energy resources were not considered in any serious way. As it turned out, both changes were helpful, and the conference as a whole was a great success.
