Abstract

Here we do not want to discuss the physiology of auxins, nor the mode of action of auxin hormones, although both aspects are nearly identical with the question for the molecular mode of action of auxin herbicides. Many reviews are mainly concerned with auxins, necessarily including auxin herbicides [1–6]. In a recent critical review Trewavas [142] suggested a new theory where not the concentration of the endogenous auxin but the sensitivity of the tissue (receptor availability) is the controlling factor. This idea would equally apply to other plant growth substances, and the term plant hormone — coined from the anticipated analogy with animal hormones — would then be inadequate. This chapter intends to give a comprehensive overview of this class of herbicides and then to concentrate on some relevant aspects.
