Zusammenfassung

Nach Liggins ist das präzise „Timing“ der Geburt bei Säugern der Ausdruck von Reifungsprozessen der Frucht („conceptus“). Nach seiner Einschätzung soll der Geburtsbeginn nicht stärker abhängig von mütterlichen Vorgängen sein als spätere Vorgänge, wie z. B. das Abstillen der Jungen oder die Pubertät (13). Als jeweils zu klärende Frage betrachtet Liggins die Mechanismen, über die ein bestimmter Reifezustand der Frucht in motorische Uterusaktivität übersetzt wird. Diese variieren offensichtlich von Spezies zu Spezies stark und sind für die Spezies Mensch weitgehend im Dunkeln.
