The Biosynthesis of Chloroplast Proteins

Abstract

Shortly after the rediscovery of Mendel’s work which formed the basis of modern genetics, the first example of non-Mendelian inheritance was reported (Baur 1909, Correns 1909). This mode, which determined the inheritance of certain characteristic leaf colorations, subsequently became known as “extrachromosomal” or “cytoplasmic” inheritance. Although it was soon realized that the genetic determinants for these characteristics were associated with plastids, it took more than half a Century to develop the experimental tools to study the processes underlying the phenomenon. These studies, which could be called “chloroplast molecular genetics”, involve the investigation of the genes and gene products responsible for the development and functioning of chloroplasts within plant cells.
