The Isotopic Composition of Lead in Galenas in the Uranium Ores at Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada

Abstract

Ion microprobe isotope analyses of Pb in galenas in uraninite-rich ore from the New Quirke Mine show that the galenas contain large proportions of radiogenic Pb, which was almost certainly generated within the associated uraninite grains and released during two episodes of Pb loss. The isotopic data indicate that the uraninite is at least 2100 m.y. old and that the second episode of Pb loss occurred less than ca. 1350 m.y. ago. The data do not preclude a detrital origin for the uraninite in the Elliot Lake quartz pebble conglomerate ores.
