Abstract

Two veinlets of compact fine-grained and coarse-grained allotriomorphic aggregates of native tellurium were found in the Musariu mine. The visible grains range from 1 mm to 30 mm and show tin-white colour and brilliant lustre. The forms observed are: m {1010}, R {1011} and r {0111}. D = 6.02–6.16 g/cm3. Microindentation hardness (VHN10–20) = 29–74 kg/mm. Main optical properties: white colour with creamy tints; slight reflexion pleochroism; strong anisotropy (grey-white) and reflectance (%) = 63.46 (486), 63.29 (551), 62.48 (589), 59.17 (656) in air, and 56.64 (486), 56.58 (551), 55.0 (589), 54.32 (656) in immersion. The chemical analyses of two specimens gave 99.45% and 96.93% Te and minor amounts of Se, Cu, Fe, Au, SiO2 and A12O3. The strongest X-ray powder diffraction Ones are: 3.23 (100), 2.35 (37), 2.25 (33) 1.824 (20), 3.853 (16), 1.615 (11), 2.083 (10) and 1.475 (10). We note the associations of native tellurium with other tellurides, quartz and clay minerals.
