Abstract

Hydrocephalus has been treated operatively since the time of Hippokrates, but the drainage systems developed by NUSLEN and SPITZ (1952), SPITZ and HOLTER (1954) and PUDENZ and HEYER (1957) could not obviate all the difficulties; on the contrary, the CSF drainage operations still rank with those neurosurgical procedures most prone to complications (Fig. 1).
