Abstract

The field of laser physics and nonlinear optics has provided many examples of instabilities occuring far from equilibrium. The analogy of the laser threshold with a second order phase transition occuring far from equilibrium was first pointed out by GRAHAM and HAKEN [1] and DIGI0RGI0 and SCULLY [2]. The laser with saturable absorber provided an analogy with first order phase transitions [3–5]. There has recently been considerable experimental and theoretical studies on coherently driven optical cavities with intracavity nonlinear absorptive or dispersive medium [6]. These systems may give rise to optical bistability [7–9].
