Abstract
More than 15 years have passed since the last major symposium on primate communication was held (Altmann 1967). At that first symposium primate communication was in its infancy; the techniques for the analysis of communication were just beginning to be developed and had not been widely applied to primate species. In fact of the 17 papers in the Altmann volume only 5 dealt with the actual structure of communication; the remaining 12 dealt with reproductive behavior, agonistic behavior, and social dynamics.
