Storage of Starch

  • Chapter
Plant Carbohydrates I

Part of the book series: Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology ((921,volume 13 / A))

Abstract

Unavoidably, the term storage implies purposeful accumulation. Such an implication is objectionable because the emphasis too easily is attached to the notion of intention rather than to the process of accumulation in the unqualified sense. Bestowing intention to the process could engender, as it undoubtedly has in the past (see Archold 1945), misleading ideas about the mechanism(s) regulating the accumulation of starch. Accordingly, the term storage is not treated here as a process per se, but rather in the sense of qualifying an organ or region where substantial quantities of starch are deposited.
