Membrane Glycoproteins

Plant Carbohydrates I

Part of the book series: Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology ((921,volume 13 / A))

Abstract

To attempt to think about membrane glycoproteins of plant cells is analogous to searching for the proverbial needles in the haystack: one is almost sure that they exist but the evidence for their existence is hard to find. Glycoproteins represent a major class of membrane components of mammalian cells; not only have their structures and functions partly been elucidated, but their modes of synthesis, segregation into membranes, and intracellular transport routes have also been investigated extensively in recent years. In absolute contrast, the molecular structure of plant cell membranes represents a vast area of cell biology in which comparatively little is known.
