Summary
Patients undergoing a variety of upper and lower abdominal surgical interventions were treated postoperatively with 6 to 10 mg of epidural morphine. The mean duration of analgesia, did not significantly differ between the high and low doses. Comparison of the effects of epidural morphine as a function of patient age, failed to reveal any difference between groups of patients over and under 65 years of age. Delayed respiratory depression was not observed in any of the patients in this series.
