Postoperative Analgesia in Cesarean Section, with Epidural Morphine

  • Chapter
Spinal Opiate Analgesia

Summary

60 women undergoing cesarean section were given epidural morphine hydrochloride (5 mg) postoperatively. Adequate analgesia was achieved in 85% of the cases within 1 or 2 hrs after injection and the analgesia lasted about 15 hrs. The normally elevated pulse and blood pressure were reduced by the onset of epidural analgesia. The side effects observed included nausea (12%), sedation (10%), dysuria (45%), and itching (60%). It is concluded that epidural morphine in these doses and in this patient series, provides a first rate postoperative analgesia in cesarean section.
