Summary
33 patients undergoing a variety of abdominal surgeries under fentanyl general anaesthesia were given epidural morphine (2 mg) postoperatively. The time of pain onset postoperatively was 9 hrs. The duration of pain relief following the first, second and third injection of epidural morphine was 20.4 ± 1.4 hr (n = 30); 22.5 ± 1.5 hr (n = 19) and 23,1 ± 2.0 hr (n = 6), respectively. There was no relationship between the duration of analgesia following the first epidural injection and the amount of fentanyl used for the operative procedure. No respiratory depression or itching were noted.
