Kinin-Releasing Pancreatic Proteinase Kallikrein

  • Chapter
Treatment of Male Infertility

Abstract

Pancreatic kallikrein, a kinin-releasing proteinase, has recently been demonstrated to be a possible new therapeutic agent in some forms of male infertility (Schill 1979a). Andrological therapy in general is largely empiric and, therefore, often unsuccessful. However, through the introduction of this tissue hormone-releasing proteinase the spectrum of andrological therapy is broadened, especially in cases of idiopathic normogonadotropic oligozoospermia and asthenozoospermia. This report will summarize the available experimental and clinical data about the efficacy of kallikrein and the kallikrein-kinin system in andrology and will discuss the practical aspects of kallikrein treatment.
