Abstract

Butorphanol tartrate is a new potent, synthetic parenteral analgesic with low addictive properties. At high doses it produces less respiratory depression than equi-analgesic doses of morphine or meperidine. It has received extensive clinical trials for relief of post-operative and chronic pain. It has been reported to be safe effective supplement to nitrous oxide-relaxant anesthesia in non-obstetric operations. Studies have not previously been done to evaluate the efficacy, safety and side effects of butorphanol as a supplement to nitrous oxide for cesarian section anesthesia.
